If you have a child who is going to try out for the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards, then they should start practicing now - the holiday break is almost over - and there are pools where they can start conditioning. The children can practice at Newport Shores clubhouse pool in Newport Beach, Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, or Newport Harbor High Pool in Newport Beach. There are several dates and they are located at the Newport Harbor High School Pool in Newport Beach, California.
For the swim try outs, a child must be 9 years old by June 23, 2008 (per the Newport Beach Lifeguards). And you must bring valid identification (for example a birth certificate or passport). Also, you must provide valid proof of Newport Beach residency (for example - car registration, driver's license, utility bill, or car registration). You need to provide three different items for proof of residency.
Each group is categorized A, B, C, D by their age. The swim consists of two complete laps (four lengths in a pool) and they must be completed in the following times. The following are the required swim times for each age group:
"A" (14-15 year olds): 1:35 (one minute, 35 seconds)

Some of the activities for children include the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program. Swim tryouts are typically in February, so check the website for updates on that information. It is important to keep your child in good physical condition in order to pass the test. Because there are a couple of months prior to the test, it is important to start to get your child in their best physical shape so that they can pass the swim test. There is an age limit of 9 years of age, and the lifeguards now require birth certificates to validate this information. I will post the dates on the swim test when they are posted. The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program runs for eight weeks throughout the summer, and it is a fantastic program. This program runs for eight weeks over the summer, and the times are 9:00 to 12:00 or 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Please click here for more information.

Huntington Beach also has the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard program. Tryouts for this program are in May, so check back to ensure that you don’t miss the try outs. Please check out this link for more information. These programs offer tremendous training for youth in regards to ocean safety, physical fitness, and of course protecting yourself from the sun. Additionally, the programs also encourage competition.
|
| Another program in Newport Beach for 15 to 16 year old is the Lifeguard Cadet Program where the trainees must pass a rigorous try out, and then pass the training. It is a paid program, and often these Cadets assist the Lifeguards with some of the activities. The tryouts include a swim, and a run/swim/run. The age for the Cadet Program in Newport Beach is 15 years of age, and if the person gets hired, they need a work permit from school. Information on the Cadet program is posted here. |
 |
| Newport Beach also offers a lifeguard program. Once again, there are tryouts which are in March, however registration is prior to that. There is a long swim, and another run/swim/run. Candidacy for this program is based upon results of the tryouts. Then there is also an oral interview, and those candidates are invited into the training program. For more information, please check out this link. |

Huntington State Beach also offers a lifeguard program. The minimum age for tryouts is 16, and once again there is a swim, and run/swim/run for tryouts. Then if that is passed, then each candidate must pass an oral interview, and then the candidates are invited into the training program. The training program consists of mock rescues, advanced CPR training, advanced first aid, and more. It is physically and mentally a challenging but extremely worthwhile program. Employees of the State program have the opportunity to be considered for a transfer to other State of California beaches. Please check out this link for more information. |

Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard
Monster Mile 2007
The Monster Mile is an annual competitive event for the participants of the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program which runs for eight weeks of the summer. The event consists of the participants dressing up as "Monsters", and then there is a parade which is judged by the Newport Beach Lifeguards who run the event After that each of the participants are issued a color coded swim cap (according to their age group), and they participate in one mile run down towards the Newport Pier - and then a one mile mile swim back to the Balboa Pier. It is quite a site to see all the Junior Lifeguards swimming back, and all the families routing for them from the Balboa pier and from the beach!
